Leicester College -
The Aeronautical Building is a continuation of the development on the Abbey Park Site for Leicester College.
We worked with the College Estates Team and LLEP to develop a cohesive strategy and design brief for the further masterplanning of the site and the development of this new learning environment for a practical skills based course.
Due to constraints with the site, the footprint of the new building slots in between the first building on the site, the School of Motor Vehicle Engineering, and a shallow Victorian era sewer, creating a triangular plot of land to construct a building.
Sharing an entrance with the MVE building, the new Aeronautical building uses timber faced fins to support the structure of the main glazed facade of the building.
The main facade is split by a large opening to allow a plane body to be accommodated within the building beneath a large triangular glazed rooflight.
The building has a Green Roof, accessed from an external stair to the rear, which includes planting at the buildings vertices.
The interior accommodation of the building includes; a large open plan workshop area and adjoining model making area, an IT lab / classroom, service areas and staff room.
