The scheme continues the development of our collaboration with Leicester College, having led the design and delivery of the new MVE Building. This project is our second major project commission with Leicester College acting in the capacity of lead consultant advisors, lead designers, and contract administrators.
Working with the College and Estates Team to support the briefing process, we developed a cohesive strategic project and design brief through a controlled process that established the creative approach and design direction.
The scheme comprised a total rethinking of first principal requirements for the teaching construct and learner facilities for the school.
The objective was to deliver on the wider aims of Leicester College in renewing the School of Construction and to provide a facility to deliver construction skills and support higher level learning.
Through this process the design team were guided and given space to develop highly creative design solutions.
This involved the complete renewal of the existing cellular building into open plan format with separation of wood machines and power tools into pod work areas. This required significant renewal of the building structure and servicing arrangements to include overhead power supplies and new dust extraction. The space is naturally ventilated through use of BMS activated glass louvers.
Power tools are separated into an Elliptical power tool room that provides an exemplar of a CNC manufactured building, which demonstrates geometric timber engineering construction techniques.
The Pod is equipped with 6 interactive display screens creating a learning hub and flexible multi use space within the School for the College to use in the widest capacity.
The Elliptical layout was derived from the activities layout planning and circulation flows through the space and develops a visually dynamic centrepiece.
The glazing layout provides complete transparency between interior spaces and provides connection with the external approach and insight into the interior.
The external envelope is fully renewed with use of seared larch rain screen modular timber cladding.
