Project

College School of Motor Vehicle Engineering comprises the first building to be located on the new Abbey Park Skills Village Campus.

The MVE Building comprises of a new build facility of approximately 1000m2 floor area.

The building provides state of the art motor vehicle engineering facilities for 80 learners and 7 staff.

The accommodation comprises of a teaching motor vehicle workshop with support storage; two classrooms; staff room; reception and changing room and toilet facilities.

Skills Village Vision

The Abbey Park Skills Village vision is to be located on a 4 Acre site to the South of the Existing Leicester College Block A Teaching Building.

To enable this project we undertook a ground clearance and site enabling phase to develop the site for construction.

Design

Rethinking the status of Motor Vehicle Engineering vocational skills was a major driver in developing the first skills village building design.

The accommodation includes areas for presentation and group working with interactive teaching wall technology alongside the practical engineering workshop.

The building includes careful consideration of natural light to include diffused top light and an iconic arched glazed opening with considered positioning of interior glazed screens providing transparency to the building and a connection on approach to the interior activities.

The feature arch provides context with the historical canal architecture surrounding the site and provides an iconic image to the School.

The building includes a highly flexible column free work shop space with a highly insulated shell delivering high levels of building energy performance.

The building is equipped to accommodate a roof mounted array of 50 solar panels to provide improved energy potential through renewables.

The Skills Village

The New School of Motor Vehicle Engineering provides an iconic first building for the Skills Village development.

MAI Ltd are appointed by Leicester College to review the development of the remaining 4 acre site and provide master planning advice for the development of a vocational skills village campus to establish a master plan proposal for development.

This builds on our work at Wakefield College where we developed a full vocational skills campus at Glasshoughton.
